Brookeville Beer Farm: My Favorite Cookie

When you attend a major beer event many of the beers blend in with the next one. However, there are some that catch your attention and the Flexible Flyer by Brookeville was one of those.

In November 2019, I was able to spend some time with Kenny Borkmann, head brewer at Brookeville Beer Farm. Kenny told me that he came from the home brew world and that was where he met Brookeville’s co-owner Phil Muth. At the time, Kenny was a public school math teacher but Phil offered him a job brewing at Brookeville. Kenny said yes and hasn't looked back.

NOTE: Kenny now writes Kenny’s Corner, a short blog post about the beer of Brookeville.

When you attend a major beer event like the Baltimore Beer Festival many of the beers blend in with the next one. However, there are some that catch your attention and the Flexible Flyer, an oatmeal stout based on an oatmeal cookie, by Brookeville was one of those. At the time, Brookeville had opened about 3 1/2 years before, a short time by businesses standards but approaching maturity for a small brewery.

The brewery and taproom has an interesting past. The main gable structure was originally a gazebo on the grounds of Mount Hope Retreat over a hundred years ago. It was later moved to its current location. The iconic cupola came from the the old Olney Round House Theater and the spire comes from the old chapel in Baltimore.

They have done some interesting barrel-aging with bourbon and rum barrels. They use a 10 barrel system, doing most of the work by hand to produce cleanest beer possible. As their name implies, they are a beer farm, so naturally they use some hops they grow on the farm, putting in about 800 rhizomes this year, plus using some malt from regional maltsters.

Final Note

The property is beautiful and the taproom relaxing. Brookeville has a beer for everyone including hazy IPAs, rum barrel stouts, a strawberry chocolate stout ready for Valentine’s Day and everything in between. Cans are available to taking home. You may come for the great beer, but don't be surprised if you fall in love with their brick oven pizza and inviting atmosphere.
